French carol from the Bas-Quercy province arranged by Nigel Williams
Whence Comes this Rush of Wings? is a traditional French carol that appeared in Carols Old and Carols New by Charles Lewis Hutchins, a collection that included both traditional and "modern" songs often used in church services and celebrations during the Christmas season.
The tune cries out for a Renaissance brass treatment, so here it is for quartet with optional tenor drum or tambourine. The percussionist could easily improvise the part, playing wherever appropriate or between the variations. Any handheld percussion instrument would work.
